Child Safety & Data
SmartTutor is used by children, so this page explains plainly what it does with your child's work, what stays on your own computer, and what — very little — reaches us.
It is a tutor, not a companion
SmartTutor answers questions about school subjects, at the grade and board you set. It is deliberately not an open-ended chatbot. It is built to know the syllabus — chapters, exercises, past-paper topics — and not to be a friend, a confidant, or a place to spend an evening.
It will not advise your child on health, legal or personal matters. If a conversation goes somewhere that matters, that is a conversation for you, your child's school, or a professional — not for a study app.
What it remembers, and what it doesn't
It remembers
- The grade, board, medium and stream you set
- Your child's name, so it can address them
- Textbooks you add, and chapters worked through
- Scanned pages, homework and revision notes
It does not
- Track time spent, sessions or streaks
- Profile your child's behaviour
- Send any of the above to us
- Talk to anyone but your child
Everything in the left-hand column is stored on the computer SmartTutor is installed on. None of it is uploaded to us, and we never receive it. One part of it does leave the machine when the tutor answers a question, and the next section sets out exactly what that is — and, just as importantly, what is not in it.
Where your child's work lives
On your own machine, in the Windows user folder:
- Profiles, textbooks, homework and revision notes:
%APPDATA%\SmartTutor - Textbook PDFs:
Documents\SmartTutor\Textbooks - Licence state:
%PROGRAMDATA%\SmartTutor
You can copy that folder, back it up, or delete it. It is yours.
What does leave your device
Two things, and only two.
The licence check. When SmartTutor activates or renews, it tells our server a machine identifier and the licence state — enough to know whether the licence is valid and how many machines have used it. No name, no grade, no schoolwork, no usage history.
Your questions, through your own AI account. The tutor's answers come from an AI service, Sarvam. You supply your own Sarvam key and pay Sarvam directly, so the request goes from your computer to Sarvam under your account and your terms — not through us. We do not receive it, store it or see it. If you would rather nothing left the machine at all, SmartTutor can run a smaller offline model instead, which answers without any internet connection.
What is in that request, precisely. We think you should be able to see this rather than take it on trust, so here is the whole of it. The request carries the grade, board and tier you set, the teaching language, the question your child typed, any homework text they pasted, the subject and chapter, and the textbook content for that chapter — which the app fetches so the answer comes from the book rather than from general knowledge. For a scanned textbook page, the page itself is sent to Sarvam's document service to be read. Nothing else goes: no name of any kind, no email address, no phone number, no address, no location, no device identifier and no licence information.
If your school bought this
On the institution edition, the tutor is set up with your school's name, not a student's name. There is no student name stored in the app and none is sent anywhere — the request to the AI service carries the school's name, the grade, board and medium, and the schoolwork itself. So a school can put this in front of a class without any child's personal data entering the picture at all.
What we never do
- No telemetry. SmartTutor does not report usage back to us. There is no analytics, no crash reporting, no "improve the product" data collection. It is not a setting you have to find and turn off; it does not exist.
- No advertising, and no profiling. We show your child no ads, and we do not build a behavioural profile of them for anyone, including ourselves.
- No social features. There is no messaging, no sharing, no user-to-user contact, and no way for a stranger to reach your child through this app.
- No selling of data. We do not sell or rent personal data, because we do not hold any about your child to sell.
What you control
In Settings you can edit or delete a profile, clear a profile's textbook and chapter data, and wipe everything on the machine. Deleting a profile removes that child's work from the computer. If you would like us to remove the licence record we hold — the email address and the machine identifier attached to your purchase — write to us and we will do it, subject to whatever we must keep for tax and accounting.
Questions, or something wrong
If you have a question about your child's data, want a copy of what we hold about you, want it corrected or deleted, or want to raise a complaint, write to us. We aim to acknowledge within three working days.
